Shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, Texas Republicans shut down debate in the state Senate over their mid-cycle congressional gerrymander.
In a final blow to democracy in the Lone Star State, the GOP ignored its own rules and denied Democrats the ability to filibuster. Moments later, the grotesquely anti-democratic bill passed, and the legislative fight was over.
But that does not mean the fight against Texas’ outrageously illegal and unconstitutional actions is finished. It has simply shifted to a new forum: the courts. At 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, my law firm filed a federal lawsuit challenging the new congressional map.
