After a filibuster, the Texas state Senate passed these extreme new districts this morning. This didn't need to happen, but vengeful partisans who want to restrict voting and protect their power are worried about next year's elections and want to tilt the playing field in advance. John: As much as we wanted to stop them, Texas's new gerrymandered maps will pass the state legislature today and be signed into law shortly thereafter.

President Trump pressured Texas legislators into "aggressively partisan congressional map" — and possibly five new seats in the U.S. House next year for his party.

Needless to say, this didn't need to happen. While opponents of voting rights run Texas and have for decades, their state was already extremely gerrymandered to protect their own power. These new maps aim to dilute the voting power of the state’s Black and brown voters, harming Texans around the state and making it harder for them to have their voices heard in their elections.

Whether it's Texas, or Florida, or Indiana (or California and New York) or any other state that's considering partisan gerrymanders, this constant escalation will only silence more potential voters and leave citizens less pleased with their elections and their representation.

President Obama said it best this week: "Over the long term, we shouldn't have political gerrymandering in America, just a fair fight between Republicans and Democrats based on who's got better ideas."

He continued: "Texas is taking direction from a partisan White House and gerrymandering in the middle of a decade to try and maintain the House despite their unpopular policies". This gerrymandering effort is simply a Trump/MAGA protection program.

It's also clear this is a racial gerrymander. For every 445,000 white Texans, there will be one congressional representative. That number rises for Hispanic Texans to 1.4 million residents for the same representation. For Black Texans, it takes 2 million residents for the same level of representation.

Fair maps and fair representation would mean those numbers were equal. Fair maps wouldn't look like a swirling vortex meant to grab *just enough* voters of certain demographics or party registration to spread them out and dilute their strength. Fair representation wouldn't be pushed through mid-decade at the request of a desperate president trying to distract from a failing economy and his involvement with an underage sex scandal.
