Dear John,

Learning loss is a concern that usually comes to mind with older children as they head into summer break and can face up to three months without daily learning opportunities. But this year, there’s a growing concern among early educators across the country about learning loss for their youngest learners due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A pandemic that is hitting families and children of color and those from under-resourced communities the hardest.

Learning loss for our littlest learners is very troubling because we know that a child’s earliest years – from birth to age 5 – are the most important when it comes to setting the foundation for a lifetime of learning and success. More than 1 million new neural connections are formed every second in the first few years of life.

This window is short, and we can’t get it back once it’s gone. Every day matters.

We need to ensure our youngest, most vulnerable children don’t fall further behind.

When you make a monthly gift, you are helping to support our early learners in three ways:
-
We can directly serve more children and families through our doula, home visiting and early learning programs that focus on those critical first weeks, months and years of a child’s life.
-
We can reach more early childhood professionals with the tools and resources they need to support our most vulnerable children and families – whether virtually or in-person.
-
We can keep early childhood development and care a top priority as our leaders look to legislation to help rebuild our country after COVID-19. Without quality care for their children, families can’t get back to work.
While many parts of the country are starting to open back up, the recovery is just beginning. We know this pandemic is hitting people of color and those living in under-resourced communities the hardest. We must do more.

Will you step up and become a monthly donor today? Just $20 a month helps us provide more children and families with the resources they need, reach more early childhood educators with training, and ensure policies are putting families first.

Thank you,
