There are nine "Johns" in the Senate right now. There have only been five Black women — ever.

While I’m proud to be among the short list of Black women who have been elected to the Senate, I’m sad that — almost 250 years into our nation’s history — that number is still so low. 

Having people in the Senate who look like the rest of America matters. 

It's how resolutions like Black Women's Equal Pay Day, which my sister Senator Angela Alsobrooks and I introduced, get passed. It's how we pass legislation honoring the late great John Lewis, expanding voting rights, and protecting people of color.
