Domestic workers across DC are afraid to go to work, take their kids to school, or go to the grocery store. Here’s how we can stop the federal occupation of DC

John,

Masked armed agents have overtaken neighborhoods across Washington DC, stationing themselves outside apartment buildings, public parks, and places of work. Domestic workers – a majority of whom are women of color and immigrants – are afraid to go to work, take their kids to school, or go to the grocery store.

An NDWA leader who works as a caregiver made the tough choice this week to quit his job caring for an older adult because he believes the risk of being detained when he travels into DC for work is too high. He can’t afford to lose that income, and this older adult needs care, but these are the impossible choices domestic workers are being forced to make.

Lawmakers in the U.S. House and Senate just introduced a joint resolution to finally end this shocking, undemocratic federal takeover of DC’s local police force. If passed, it would be a huge step to halt the dangers facing domestic workers, restore power to local leaders, and bring safety to our communities.

Graphic saying: Tell Congress: Troops out of DC

This isn’t about law and order – this is about sowing fear. Violent crime in DC is at a 30-year low. Military troops and local police under the control of the federal government are targeting people doing the jobs that help DC run and power its economy — who make and deliver food, take care of our loved ones, help us get to where we need to go, and so much more.

Instead of safety, this takeover of DC is sowing chaos and terror. This is an attack on all of us, and we must do something to stop it.

Domestic workers depend on each day of work to feed their families, pay rent, and afford basic necessities. The federal militarized takeover is forcing nannies, home care workers, and cleaners to choose between economic security and risking harassment or arrest.

We cannot allow our elected officials to stay silent in the face of this military takeover of our capital. We need Congress to act now to stop the federal occupation of DC – but to get them to act it will take ALL of us speaking out.

Every day this takeover continues, more families will suffer. More incomes will be lost. More trust will be broken. We cannot allow the very workers who give our community its strength to remain living in fear.

This is our moment to defend DC, support our communities, and make our voices impossible to ignore.

As always, thanks for all you do,

NDWA

Dignity, Unity, Power

The majority of domestic workers sit at the center of some of our nation’s most decisive issues because of who they are and what they do: they are women – mostly women of color, immigrants, mothers, and low-wage workers. They are impacted by almost every policy affecting the future of our economy, democracy and country.

Domestic workers can lead us toward a new, inclusive vision for the future for all of us -- and your grassroots support is the fuel that can get us there.
