Folks—

To me, Virginia means everything.

It’s why as a young entrepreneur, dad, and business owner, I stepped up to run for Senate to fight for our Commonwealth in the halls of Congress.

And I worked my tail off on my very first campaign – and still came up short.

I now call it my silver medal campaign.

Decades later, I can confidently say that the better candidate won. My friend, the late Senator John Warner (no relation!), was a hell of a warrior for Virginia.

Over the years (and after more successful campaigns for Governor and then Senate), I got to know the Republican Senator with my same last name. We didn’t agree on most things, but always agreed on the end goal: strengthening Virginia’s economy, making our communities stronger and safer, and giving our kids a fair shot at success.

It’s why in 2014, Republican John Warner endorsed my campaign.

John Warner isn’t the only friend I’ve made across the aisle. I’m proud to have been a part of nearly every bipartisan deal made in the Senate in the past decade.

From lowering the cost of health care, to fighting back the COVID-19 pandemic and passing the largest infrastructure and public lands investments in half a century: we haven’t always gotten it perfectly right, but we’ve gotten a lot accomplished.

Look, I still believe in the importance of cutting a bipartisan deal – but MY GOSH – this is no longer John Warner’s Republican party. I’m so sick and tired of hearing my Republican colleagues tell me one thing in private and then voting another way, just to appease Donald Trump.

The corruption, the chaos, the incompetence – it’s mind-boggling to me how my Republican colleagues repeatedly bend the knee to Trump. And frankly it’s a massive departure from the common decency we used to expect from our leaders.
