Nine community gardens have sprouted up in Wilkinsburg, turning a handful of the borough’s hundreds of vacant lots into flourishing spaces ([link removed]) .

On North Avenue, Jerry Gaudi Jr. and some neighbors turned the site of a demolished apartment building into a bird habitat and pollination garden ([link removed]) .

“The neighbors now maintain their yards, and the beautification deters issues of crime,” Gaudi said ([link removed]) .
