John, it's Gabe.

In July, Trump and the Republicans pushed through a tax law that gave billionaires a huge break — to pay for it, they slashed $180 billion from SNAP, the program that helps people buy food.

It’s the biggest cut to food assistance in our country’s history — and here in New Mexico, it could mean 175,000 people lose the help they count on to put food on the table.

We’re talking about families where the grocery budget is already stretched thin. Seniors who rely on SNAP and Meals on Wheels to get by. Kids in early childhood programs who may not have anything to eat at home — except maybe a bowl of cereal, if that.

The idea that food is where we’re going to “tighten the belt” — while billionaires cash in — is flat-out backwards.

We should be doing the opposite — expanding access, not shrinking it.

We should be making sure no kid goes to bed hungry. We should be making sure our parents and grandparents are taken care of. We should be making sure that no one in southern New Mexico — or anywhere — has to wonder where their next meal is coming from.

That’s what I’m fighting for. But I need your help to keep going. Will you chip in $10 or whatever you can to help us keep up the fight — and make sure southern New Mexico’s families don’t get left behind?
