Catching Up with Quigley: Week In Review

It was another busy week in IL-05, where I fought back against Donald Trump and paid tribute to a beloved Chciagoan.

1. Demanded Trump Release $300 Million in CDC Funding

The Trump administration has frozen $300 million in CDC grant funding. Without these funds, state and local governments will have to cut back on programs to fight smoking, obesity, epilepsy, mental illnesses, and more.

I proudly joined over 35 fellow House Democrats in demanding these funds be released.

2. Paid Tribute to Chicago's "AIDS Angel"

Lori Cannon in December 2024 at GroceryLand, 5543 N. Broadway, the latest incarnation of a food pantry and meal delivery service she helped start in 1988, once for people dying of AIDS, now for those living with HIV and, truth be told, anyone in need who comes in the door.

Most of us in Chicago have heard of Lori Cannon. Our “AIDS Angel,” she made it her life’s mission to serve Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community: leading protests during the AIDS epidemic, collecting food donations for those in need, and honoring the deceased through the AIDS Memorial Quilt. When Ms. Cannon passed away on August 3, we lost a selfless champion.

I entered Ms. Cannon’s story into the Congressional Record so every American can celebrate her life, her work, and her dedication to the LGBTQ+ community.

3. Condemned Trump Buddying Up to Putin

When Donald Trump met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump gave Putin exactly what he wanted. He was welcomed onto U.S. soil, his lies about the invasion were given free airtime, and he made demands that went uncontested because President Zelenskyy was excluded from the meeting.

While I'm relieved that European leaders gathered with President Zelenskyy in DC on Monday, our credibility as a nation is now at stake. Our allies around the world are questioning America’s commitments to peace and democracy. This meeting between the leader of the free world and a ruthless dictator only shows the world that the values of democracy and freedom are negotiable.
