When I raised my hand to take the oath as the 49th governor of the great state of Michigan 18 months ago, I never could have fathomed what was headed our way.
I never could have imagined the aggressive measures I would have to take to save Michigan lives. In consultation with some of the country’s top public health experts, I took strong and decisive measures to keep Michiganders safe. And the experts agree with me: Our stay-at-home order saved countless lives.
And, to be frank, I also never could have imagined that the biggest opposition in our quest to protect Michigan from a deadly and unpredictable virus -- and a collapsing global economy -- would be the president of the United States.
But that’s exactly what happened. The president went on the attack, calling me “that woman in Michigan,” and egged on armed protestors to threaten me, while the Republican-controlled state legislature sat on the sidelines.
In fact, Republicans here in Michigan have enabled our president by introducing bills to take away my powers. The president’s ill-advised followers have sued me. And they’re now knee-deep in their fourth effort to recall me from office. We have not yet seen the worst of it. I need your help today to fight back.

We’ve learned over the past three-and-a-half years that this president seems most comfortable governing by tweet, not doing the hard work of leading and building coalitions with people who may not always agree with him.
But I certainly won’t bend to petty, partisan threats. I work for the people of Michigan, even those who disagree with me, and I’ll always follow the science and data to protect and defend the hardworking people of our great state.
Our stay-at-home approach flattened the curve here in Michigan, prevented the pandemic from completely overwhelming our emergency rooms and intensive care units, and saved thousands of lives.
However, as I tell anyone and everyone who asks, we are not out of the woods yet. We’ll need leaders who will be vigilant if and when COVID-19 rates spike again in Michigan. We need leaders who believe in science and govern while heeding the advice of experts. That’s why I’m reaching out again today.
