Give Community Science a Shot. Give Deer Spy a Try!

Harvesting a deer has to wait until opening day, but hunters play an active and crucial role in wildlife management throughout the year. It's your boots on the ground that help Maine shape management goals, reach harvest objectives, collect biological samples, provide funding support, and inspire the next generation of conservationists in camo.
But there is one more opportunity to go beyond filling your freezer and have a real impact on white-tailed deer management that most Maine hunters haven't tapped into yet- community science. We're on the hunt for new Deer Spy participants!
*Deer Spy* [ [link removed] ] is a community science project that invites hunters and other wildlife enthusiasts to work in tandem with biologists to bolster our understanding of Maine's white-tailed deer population simply through sharing what they see. *We are interested in all white-tailed deer observations anywhere in Maine from August 1 through September 30.*
Whether you watch deer to pass time until the season finally starts, or incorporate Deer Spy into your pre-season scouting, all you need to do is fill out our online form [ [link removed] ] with the following information.
* *Location*
* *Date and time*
* *The number of does (adult female deer with no antlers, with or without fawns)*
* *The number of bucks (deer with antlers)*
* *The number of fawns (young deer born this year, with or without a doe(s))*
These simple statistics help strengthen the science behind permit allocations by revealing white-tailed deer recruitment patterns. Hundreds of Deer Spy participants submit observations each year but we know there are a lot more Maine hunters with their eyes on deer this time of year! The more hunters become community scientists, the more we can fine-tune management together and protect the resource for generations to come. Give Community Science a shot!
