Friend, I firmly believe that voters should choose their representatives – not the other way around.

That's why I introduced the very first bill in the Senate to ban partisan gerrymandering and ensure our democracy works for all Americans. Unfortunately, Republicans have other plans.

Donald Trump and his GOP colleagues are willing to do anything to keep their majorities in 2026 – even if it means disenfranchising voters.

So President Trump ordered the Texas GOP to rig the game by redrawing the state's congressional maps – and gerrymandering Texas's five Democratic House seats out of existence. They obeyed.

Let me be clear: What Texas Republicans are doing is dangerous and undermines our democracy. 

As Trump takes a wrecking ball to our democratic institutions, our courts, and our fundamental checks and balances to cling to power, we can't fight back with one arm tied behind our backs.

So, as wrong as partisan gerrymandering is, what states like California are doing is necessary to confront this fight head-on. The stakes are too high not to act.

Governors are on the frontlines of the fight against Donald Trump, and as Colorado's next governor, I will stand up to him every day to put Colorado first.
