John,
The Trump takeover of Washington, DC is horrifying. ICE agents are kidnapping people off the streets. Federal agents and the federalized police force are tearing down encampments, criminalizing homelessness.
DC’s lack of statehood makes Trump’s illegal overreach easier here. But make no mistake, his authoritarianism will impact us all. Right now, he’s just testing the limits of his power.
As the Policy and Strategic Partnerships Manager at the Coalition on Human Needs, I work with allies throughout our movement to defend vulnerable communities and uplift your voice and the voices of everyday people across the country.
Our organizing work, together, is what stands between us and an undemocratic society where wealth and power trump laws and justice.

John,
One power grab after another.
When Donald Trump took control of the California National Guard and sent U.S. Marines into the streets of Los Angeles to silence dissent, that was a test of not only his executive authority, but of our Constitution itself.
His phony emergency to federalize the Washington, DC police and send troops into DC neighborhoods is another political power grab. It’s not about crime since violent crime in DC is at a 30-year low.1 This is about political retribution. That’s why he’s named other cities such as Chicago and Baltimore that he views as unsupportive of his racist immigration agenda.
But Trump’s authoritarianism didn’t start and doesn’t end with sending the military into our communities. His freezing funds, firing workers, and dismantling programs despite laws passed by Congress; his seizures of immigrants without due process; his attacks on unions; his eagerness to overturn the Constitution—his power grabs started in all these ways. Facts can be inconvenient for authoritarians, so he’s also attacking basic information―firing the nonpartisan Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics because he doesn’t like the jobs report numbers; investigating the Smithsonian museums because, in his eyes, they focus too much on “how bad Slavery was;” deleting climate reports that show the impacts of global warming; eliminating funding for NPR and PBS, two of the most trusted news organizations in the world; and much more.
At the Coalition on Human Needs, we’re providing people and organizations with the tools to organize our communities and fight back against rising authoritarianism.
Every day, in coalition with allies across the country, we are organizing against the White House’s actions that are attempting to take power away from the people and consolidate it in the Executive Branch. If we fight alone, democracy dies. But when we fight together, we can defend our free speech rights, our right to information, our right to vote, and our right to live freely without masked agents kidnapping us and our neighbors off the streets.
In the face of rising authoritarianism, rush a donation today to power our activism and advocacy to defend vulnerable communities and our basic rights.
