Email from Rep. Salazar As always it is an honor representing you and your family in Washington, D.C. FL-27 Newsletter Vol. 119, Issue #15 Dear Friends/Amigos, August may be a recess month for Congress, but our work for the people of District 27 never pauses. My team and I continue pushing forward on the issues that matter most to our community. I’m committed to making sure your stories and concerns guide every decision. District 27’s priorities remain at the heart of everything I do. Follow along on Facebook, Instagram, and X for updates from Capitol Hill and from across our district. And if you'd like to reach out directly, don't hesitate to call or write to my D.C. office at (202) 225-3931 or visit Salazar.House.Gov. Sincerely/Atentamente, María E. Salazar U.S. Representative (FL-27) I Co-Lead a Bipartisan Initiative to Strengthen Care for Mothers and Newborns Last week in Washington, I joined Representative Lois Frankel (FL-22) to reintroduce the bipartisan Connected Maternal Online Monitoring (MOM) Act. This bill will provide expectant and new mothers with preventive resources to avoid potential complications during and after pregnancy. As a lawmaker and a mother, I am deeply committed to strengthening maternal health. Ensuring that expectant mothers have access to every tool necessary is vital to supporting maternal health and to our nation’s future. I am proud to reintroduce legislation that would give new and expecting mothers and their children the head start they deserve with the best technology our country has to offer. You can read more about the bill here. I Sent a Letter Demanding Investigation and Action Against Companies Evading Cuba Sanctions This week, I sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent demanding an investigation into companies in South Florida that may be attempting to evade U.S. sanctions on the Cuban communist regime. My constituents want their government to look into this flouting of the law. We cannot permit possible accomplices of tyranny to enrich themselves at the expense of the Cuban people’s struggle for freedom. Every dollar that slips through sanctions undermines U.S. policy and strengthens the hand of oppressors in Havana. In Cuba’s totalitarian system, nothing enters or leaves the island without the regime taking its cut. U.S. law strictly prohibits American tourism and commercial dealings with the dictatorship. Recent complaints indicate that some newly established companies in South Florida may be using services such as “tourism packages,” “logistics,” door-to-door shipping, and car sales as potential vehicles to sidestep sanctions. If confirmed, these activities would directly undermine U.S. policy designed to cut off resources to the regime. Reports also suggest that some of the companies’ founders may be linked to individuals close to the Cuban regime. For example, Jorge Javier Rodríguez Cabrera, recently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was identified as a close associate of one of Raúl Castro’s grandchildren. These developments raise serious concerns about whether such businesses are being used to provide the dictatorship with a financial lifeline it does not deserve. I have urged the administration to fully investigate these companies and take appropriate enforcement action if violations are confirmed. You can read the full letter here.
