UPDATE: Compactor installation has been postponed to Thursday, August 28 due to Puget Sound Energy rescheduling electrical work. This date could change unexpectedly due to PSE's availability. We encourage customers to check the transfer station webpage for the latest updates before visiting.
What to expect
The Kitsap County Solid Waste Division is advising customers to plan for delays and service disruptions at the Olympic View Transfer Station from Thursday, August 28 through early September due to installation of a second industrial garbage compactor. On these dates, the facility will switch to generator power during electrical work.
The facility should remain open, but customers may experience:
- Longer than normal wait times for customers
- Slower credit card processing
- Longer lines at the payment window
- Short-term facility closures
How to prepare
During the project, transfer station customers should:
- Postpone trips, if possible
- Check for updates before visiting
- Pay with cash or check to speed up payments
- Allow extra time for your visit
Kitsap County has taken multiple steps to prevent and minimize facility closures and disruptions during this project. We are committed to keeping customers informed and will share frequent updates.
About the project
The Olympic View Transfer Station, owned by Kitsap County, currently operates with one garbage compactor. This aging machine has required frequent repairs and maintenance in recent years. To improve reliability and increase capacity at the facility, the county bought a second compactor in 2023 for $1.4 million.
The new machine — a SSI Shredding Systems 4500SPH Pre-load Compactor — weighs 176,000 pounds and provides 200 tons of compaction force. Once operational, it will work alongside the existing compactor to process and load garbage into 48-foot intermodal containers, which are then shipped by train to the Columbia Ridge Landfill in Arlington, Oregon.
The original compactor will remain in operation until its scheduled replacement in 2026.
