Attorneys General Nessel, Mayes Discuss Legal Challenges to Unlawful Trump Actions

*LANSING* – In the latest episode of their podcast, "Pantsuits and Lawsuits" [ [link removed] ], Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes take listeners behind the scenes of their relentless legal battle against what they describe as “the most unconstitutional administration in American history.” In just six months, the attorneys general have filed more than 25 lawsuits against the Trump Administration to protect residents from unlawful actions and illegal federal funding cuts. 

Through successful litigation, Michigan has preserved $1.6 billion and Arizona $1.2 billion in federal funding for vital programs. These dollars support healthcare, education, infrastructure, and public safety. Among the most significant Michigan court victories are:  


* Saving $25 million for local school district building upgrades, 
* Recouping millions in disaster relief funding,  
* Protecting library funding serving millions of cardholders,  
* Saving cancer research and treatment programs,   
* Preserving road funding, and 
* Preventing the dismantling of the AmeriCorps job program. 

In many cases, the Trump administration has abandoned its efforts after initial court defeats rather than pursuing appeals – a pattern the attorneys general attribute partly to staffing challenges at the Department of Justice, where many experienced attorneys have departed.  

"In Michigan, our lawsuits have already preserved more than $1.6 billion that the federal government attempted to illegally withhold from our residents," Nessel said. "Now, most of those funds have been returned to our state, where they rightfully belong, to help fund our roads, education and healthcare. That is a substantial victory for taxpayers, and I will continue to fight to protect our constituents and uphold the rule of law."  

The attorneys general also discuss their ongoing efforts to block the administration's alarming and aggressive data collection efforts. They detail federal attempts to use sensitive, personal information from the Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Medicaid, and SNAP programs for immigration enforcement.
