John,
There’s no denying it: to win critical elections and to build political power, Democrats have to get serious about registering new voters.
According to a new New York Times analysis, Democrats have lost 2.1 million registered voters since 2020 across the 30 states that track party affiliation. In that same period, Republicans gained 2.4 million—a net swing of 4.5 million voters.

The details are alarming:
- In battleground states like North Carolina and Pennsylvania, Democrats’ registration edge has shrunk dramatically.
- In 2024, Republicans captured 29% of new voters to Democrats’ 26%, flipping a long-held registration pattern.
- Some of the steepest declines have occurred with younger male voters.
This crisis has been building for years, which is why Vote Pro-Choice added voter registration to our programs in 2022, focusing on critical areas in Georgia, North Carolina, and Michigan.
We target areas with nested opportunities, and in states like North Carolina and Michigan, critical local elections in 2025 give us the chance to register and engage new voters now—so they’re ready to show up again in 2026.
Abortion rights are one of the most powerful onboarding issues of our time, with more than 40% of voters under the age of 30 naming reproductive freedom as their top concern.
Through our program, we can register new voters in places like Michigan, Ohio, and Georgia for just $2.92 per voter.
If you’re able to support this work, your dollars will make a real difference:
The stakes here are high, but we have a pathway to success. There is no such thing as an “off year,” because what we do right now could determine federal election results next year.
Thank you so much for supporting programs like ours: they’re how we’ll build back a more just country, with reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy for all.
With gratitude,
Sara Tabatabaie
