John, Trump’s D.C. takeover is a preview of his nationwide strategy to crack down on dissent – and if we don’t stop it now, armed National Guard troops might soon be coming to a city near you. [1]
But here’s the good news: our strategy to stop this takeover is nationwide, too.
This week, we’re driving thousands of calls to lawmakers, mobilizing people to protest in D.C., and taking action in states across the country – like Common Cause Ohio’s press conference urging Gov. DeWine to bring the Ohio National Guard home. [2]

John, will you join our movement to STOP Trump’s authoritarian D.C. takeover? Tell Congress to act now >>
For more information, see our message below from earlier this week.

ACT NOW: Tell Congress that soldiers don’t belong in our streets – and D.C. residents deserve to decide their own future. STOP Trump’s authoritarian D.C. takeover >>
John, President Trump is declaring a phony “state of emergency” in Washington, D.C., federalizing the local police, and putting his cronies in charge – against the wishes of D.C.’s residents and elected leaders. [1]
It's obvious this isn't really about crime (which is at record lows in D.C. [2]), but rather a blatant attempt to make D.C. residents feel like they aren't safe in their own homes, suppress dissent, and take attention away from how Trump’s policies are leaving people worse off.
Congress has the power – and responsibility – to stop this. Lawmakers just introduced resolutions in the House and Senate to STOP Trump’s phony “emergency” and return power to D.C. officials. [3] Now it’s on all of us to demand our members of Congress act now and pass it.
TAKE ACTION: Add your voice to tell Congress to pass this bill as quickly as possible and shut down Trump’s hostile takeover of our nation’s capital city. >>
Trump is seizing power – and he’s made it clear he’ll keep the National Guard ready to roll into any city or state at a moment’s notice. [4] If Congress doesn’t stop him now, nowhere will be off limits.
D.C.’s lack of power is a vulnerability for our democracy – an easy first target for Trump because its 700,000 residents are still denied full democratic rights. [5]
They pay more in federal taxes than residents of 22 states, yet have no voting representation in Congress. Nearly half of D.C.’s residents are Black – and their voices are silenced while Trump and his allies strip away their rights and their safety. [6]
Trump has already slashed local programs, overruled city leaders, and is now forcing “tough on crime” policies voters have rejected again and again. None of D.C.’s elected officials asked for this. Trump is imposing it anyway.
Congress can stop this – but only if we demand it. Tell Congress to STOP Trump’s D.C. takeover >>
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
