Friend, here's the latest on what’s happening with redistricting:
- Yesterday, Texas House Republicans passed a gerrymandered congressional map that could hand Republicans up to five additional House seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
- Meanwhile Republicans in Indiana, Missouri, Florida, and other states are considering redrawing their own congressional maps to carve out even more seats for Republicans, at Trump’s urging.
- Today, the California legislature passed the “Election Rigging Response Act” to move forward with Governor Gavin Newsom’s plan to let voters decide whether the state legislature can redraw California’s own congressional maps ahead of the midterms—giving voters the opportunity to push back against the Republican power grab we’re seeing.
- Ballots will drop in California on October 6, and Election Day is set for November 4.
As we mentioned in our last email, Swing Left is going all in to support the ballot measure in California. Our north star remains flipping the House and putting a check on the MAGA agenda. Canceling out the gains Republicans have made through gerrymandering in Texas—which this initiative would fight for—is critical to making that happen, while also protecting the democratic process for the entire country.
New polling data shows that although a majority of California voters do support the initiative, it’s very close. That means every vote, every phone call, every door knocked, and every dollar raised will count.
We anticipate that phone banking signups will be available early next week, and we’re working on canvassing opportunities, too. We’ll be in touch again in the next few days when we have more details on how to volunteer.
[In the meantime, if you’d like to take immediate action, one of the best ways you can make an impact is to make a donation of any amount, split between Swing Left and Governor Newsom’s Ballot Measure Committee.]([link removed])

By making a donation to both Swing Left and the ballot measure, you’ll be powering our joint efforts to turn out voters in California’s special election and Swing Left’s work to invest in early organizing in key swing districts that will decide the House majority.
If the ballot measure succeeds, it will counter the unfair advantage Republicans are attempting to gain in Texas and be a turning point in the fight for control of the House. And at the same time, we still need to be investing in early organizing in swing districts in other states, too.
Friend, this effort isn’t about rigging the maps for Democrats—it’s about forcefully pushing back against the GOP’s latest power grab and ensuring the path to flipping the House remains open.
Republicans can see the writing on the wall, and they know their unpopular policies will put them at a disadvantage in the midterms. That’s why they’re undertaking this highly unusual mid-decade redistricting effort to lock in their power for the long term.
The best way to stop Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda is to flip the House next year, and the California ballot initiative is critical to that effort. This community has risen to the challenge in tough races before—and in this critical moment, we know we can do it again.
[While we finalize details on volunteer opportunities, if you want to get involved right now, the best way to power our efforts in California and across the country is to split a donation between Swing Left and Governor Newsom’s Ballot Measure Committee.]([link removed])
