Dear Friends,

Thank you for your generous contributions to our Matching Gift Challenge. We are very close to meeting our target and helping our ships return to sea after months in quarantine. We need your help to make this happen. For a limited time, all donations will be doubled up to a maximum of $ 165,000. This offer was made possible due to the generosity of Claudine Chapuis and an anonymous donor.

Join the Matching Gift Challenge <[link removed]>, and help Sea Shepherd continue to protect marine life around the world.

The Race to Save a Species

<[link removed]>

Update on Sea Shepherd’s lawsuit to save New Zealand’s Māui dolphins from extinction. The smallest dolphin species in the world, the Māui dolphin, is on a fast track to extinction. With an estimated 50 dolphins left, the loss of even one individual could deal a fatal blow for the species.

Like the critically endangered vaquita porpoise in Mexico, these rare cetaceans are killed as bycatch in fisheries that export vast amounts of seafood to the United States. However, under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, U.S. agencies are required to ban such imports when the level of bycatch is so high. In May 2020, Sea Shepherd Legal sued the responsible agencies, including NOAA Fisheries, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Treasury, and the Department of Homeland Security, to force the mandated ban and protect the last remaining Māui dolphins from extinction. The Threat Management Plan recently announced by New Zealand is grossly insufficient and will not save the species. Accordingly, Sea Shepherd is filing a motion for a preliminary injunction to ensure that New Zealand stops killing Māui dolphins.
