** Even when they try to rig the rules for renewables, California still fails.
------------------------------------------------------------
Politico ([link removed]) (8/18/25) reports: "In June 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a major budget trailer bill that was a key step in California’s yearslong effort to pare down its notoriously byzantine permitting processes. AB 205 created an optional permitting process that would allow large renewable energy projects to get the green light from the CEC, effectively sidestepping local advocates who have become so effective at wielding county-level laws to mothball construction. But three years later, developers are still facing a lengthy review process. The centerpiece 270-day review timeline only kicks off once the CEC determines that an application is complete. It’s taken the CEC about a year on average to make that determination for the four projects that have made it that far in the opt-in process. The second longest-tenured project in the pipeline,
a solar and battery project in Imperial County, applied over 530 days ago and still hasn’t received its stamp of approval that its application is complete."

** "Let’s be honest. Let’s engage in real science around climate change. The Trump administration is excited to have an open debate on facts – not fear – over the next four years."

(8/19/25) reports: "In a Truth Social post, the president said, 'A Copper Mine in Arizona, ‘Resolution,’ was just delayed by a Radical Left Court for two months — 3,800 Jobs are affected, and our Country, quite simply, needs Copper — AND NOW! They are looking to do an Expedited Appeal before the Ninth Circuit, but it is so sad that Radical Left Activists can do this, and affect the lives of so many people.' The plaintiffs have argued that before the land transfer can take place, the government must prepare a review that 'covers every aspect of the planned mine and all related infrastructure.' They argue the government failed to consider possible issues such as dam breach, pipeline failure, and if there is a contingency plan for a tailings' storage area."
Not surprising NYT, but pretty disappointing.

(8/20/25) opinion: "Articles addressing energy and climate topics in The New York Times (NYT) increasingly include Inaccurate data and false information. The problem is compounded by the paper’s failure to follow its own corrections policy when errors are called to its attention. As a lifetime reader of the NYT, the frequency of errors and a refusal to fix them raises doubts regarding the accuracy of information presented on other topics. Whether or not the problem extends beyond energy and climate, the NYT readership clearly deserves better. Three recent NYT articles illustrate the problem: a July 22 article by Max Bearak, ostensibly reporting on remarks by UN Secretary-General Guterres’ on renewable energy; a May 26 article by Ivan Penn on competition between electric vehicles (EVs) and vehicles powered by internal combustion engine (ICEVs); and an April 23 column by David Wallace-Wells on the loss of cultural and political momentum for action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."
If true, maybe there's hope for you yet, New York.

(8/17/25) opinion: "It was back in 2021 that I started to ask which country or U.S. state would be the first to hit the 'Green Energy Wall.' It has long been obvious to anyone who looks at the situation that the fantasy of a fully de-carbonized energy system, with everything run on electricity generated by intermittent wind and sun, could never happen. But what would be the limiting condition that would put a stop to the madness? Would it be confronting the absurd costs of grid-scale battery storage? Or perhaps a string of blackouts caused by insufficient backup of the wind and solar generation? Here in New York, we are starting to see some push back from politicians on the fantasy green energy transition, but the source may be the last thing you would have predicted. The immediate issue is the cost of upgrading local delivery infrastructure to transmit sufficient electricity for the imagined future of electrified buildings and vehicles."
