John,
My entire life, I have been taught to follow the rules, abide by the laws, and try my best to do good when and where I can. Recently, I have been having a hard time sleeping and even going about my life.
The weight of this moment has been dawning on me. The rules and laws we’ve been following are being written and carried out by men and women with no conscience or human decency. The laws themselves are immoral.
So what do I do? What do we do?
What do we do when the law is to abduct children? What do we do when the law is to murder children indiscriminately, as is the case with Israel—whom we fund and effectively give the green light to do whatever they want? What do we do when the government has turned its back on its people and acts in ways that go against the very fabric of what it means to be an American?
I am struggling to rationalize this moment, and I think it’s because it cannot be rationalized. We are living in a very dark time, not just here in America but globally. Every morning, I wake up, watch the news, and then see my three children come down the stairs one by one.
I smile because it’s still early in the morning and they haven't driven me crazy yet; but in that moment, I can’t help but wonder: what kind of country are we leaving for them?
I don’t want this message to be one of desperation, tragedy, or regret. I want to share with you a behind-the-scenes look at what this work means and why we do it.
I founded No Dem Left Behind with the hope of uplifting folks across the country who are ideologically aligned with the progressive movement but do not have a local community they can turn to for help or support.
Then Gaza happened, and we learned the hard way that for some in the Democratic Party, “progressive” meant everything except Palestine. That was my red line.
We have no choice but to fight: fight for our country, fight for our democracy, fight for our way of life—for our children and for generations to come. I am not done fighting for our progressive values, and I know you aren’t either.
But we must do better as a movement, because, to be completely honest, we have never been weaker than we are right now. Our leadership in Congress—Schumer, Jeffries—has failed us.
They are the textbook definition of coastal elites who simply don’t get it.
They ignored the inflation crisis that gave Trump the opening to seize power in the first place.
The fight we face right now is inside the Democratic primaries. I have met with dozens of progressive challengers who are taking on do-nothing Democrats. We need leaders who will fight for us, who believe in our values, and who will do whatever it takes to win back this country and do good for the American people.
That’s why I’m asking you: stand with us. Join this fight. Chip in today to help progressive challengers take on the establishment and win. For our future, for the next generation, for our values, and for the hope that this country can still offer the dreams it once promised.
