EU2020DE | Syria | Youth Guarantee







This week, Germany will take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU, kicking off a trio programme it shares with Portugal and Slovenia.



On Tuesday, the EU and the United Nations will co-chair the Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region”. Later on this week, the European Commission is expected to present a proposal aimed at strengthening the Youth Guarantee, which focuses on improving the economic situation and labour market integration of young people.

This week, the European Parliament’s subcommittee on human rights (DROI) will discuss the EU’s external migration policy and the effects of climate change on human rights. On Monday, the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) will vote on an opinion on artificial intelligence in education, culture and the audiovisual sector, while the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) will hold a debate on the establishment of an EU Mechanism on Democracy, the Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights.

This week, the College is expected to present a proposal to strengthen the Youth Guarantee. Over the past years, the tool has helped respond to endemic youth unemployment and thereby aims to improve the lives and economic situation of young people in Europe. Moreover, the Commission will discuss the “Updated Skills Agenda for Europe” which should be adopted by the Commission in the third quarter of 2020.

This Wednesday marks the beginning of the German Council Presidency, which has set itself the task of steering the EU’s recovery from the pandemic, concluding the MFF negotiations and finding an agreement on the future EU-UK relations before the transition period ends. The German presidency marks the first of a trio which also includes Portugal and Slovenia. 



Moreover, this week the EU and the United Nations will hold the fourth Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region”, which will feature meetings of Foreign Ministers on Tuesday.
