As Dawn and I are getting Mia and James ready to go back to school, I
can’t help but think about the teacher who changed the trajectory of my
life.
Señora Rothstein.
I had a long record of getting kicked out of classes, but never from
Señora Rothstein’s.
The very first time that she was the one to send me to the principal’s
office, and I was back in that familiar chair, I’ll never forget what I
heard her say. “It’s not that he’s hurting me. It’s that he’s hurting
himself, and he doesn’t even know how smart he is.”
She was the first person who ever said that to me. From that day forward,
I was at the front of Señora Rothstein’s class, trying to be the best
student for her. And that is the importance of a good teacher and of
education.
Educators all across Maryland are making a difference in children's lives
every day because they see our students – no matter their background,
race, religion, or family lineage.
It’s why I’m proud of the record investments my administration has made in
Maryland’s public schools.
We passed the Excellence in Maryland Public Schools Act to support our
schools by recruiting more teachers and providing the necessary resources
to our students.
And we’ve recently recruited fired federal workers into teaching jobs.
But, with a new school year just around the corner, I have to be
transparent: Trump has cut more than $480 million in funding for public
schools since taking office, and it’s unclear what the impact will be on
our state and our students.

someone with Maryland’s students top of mind. If you’re with us, please
contribute $5, $10, to help us keep fighting for the best for Maryland’s
students.
