John,
Hurricane Erin is set to churn up along the East Coast this week, bringing dangerous rip currents, flooding, and even mandatory evacuations in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Millions of people around the country are relying on the National Weather Service for up-to-the-minute forecasts to keep their families safe.
But Donald Trump and his allies are still working to privatize the Weather Service and turn life-saving forecasts into a for-profit subscription scheme.
This isn’t some empty promise. If you remember the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, you might remember that its 900 page agenda explicitly called for “commercializing” the Weather Service. That means when the next hurricane hits, Americans could be forced to pay out of pocket just to get the alerts they need to evacuate safely while Trump’s friends in the private weather industry cash in.
We’ve already seen the impacts of the NWS’ major layoffs during the devastating floods in Kerr County, Texas. We need to let that tragedy serve as a warning and a wake-up call that we must protect the National Weather Service. For over 150 years, the NWS has served the public, not corporations. As climate disasters grow more extreme, it must stay that way.
Congress needs to hear us loud and clear: Stop Trump’s privatization scheme before it costs lives. Vital weather information shouldn’t be put behind a paywall.
Thank you for standing with us,
Democratic Values 🌤️
