This week, Texas Democratic lawmaker Nicole Collier made headlines for refusing to bow to Republican intimidation.

Rep. Collier—a seven-term legislator and former Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus—was told she could not leave the state Capitol without a police escort. She spent the night on the House floor, standing firm against GOP efforts to silence her voice and ram through gerrymandered maps designed to keep Republicans in power.

“I refuse to comply with this unreasonable, un-American and unnecessary request,” she said.

At Ruth’s List Florida, we know exactly what’s at stake when women like Rep. Nicole Collier refuse to back down: our democracy, our freedom, and our future.

That’s why we recruit, train, and elect Democratic pro-choice women here in Florida—leaders who will never be bullied into silence, no matter how extreme the attacks become.

But let’s be clear: the same forces threatening democracy in Texas are at work right here in Florida. Ron DeSantis and his Republican allies are undermining voting rights, attacking women’s freedoms, and redrawing the political map to keep themselves in power.

If we want to fight back, we need to put more women like Nicole Collier in office—right now.
