In Allegheny County, Black people make up 32% of those who are subject to so-called “302” hospitalizations, while accounting for just 13% of the county population. Involuntary commitments can heal or hurt ([link removed]) , and county efforts to understand and address disparities continue.

The county is considering supplementing the “302” system of forced hospitalization with court-ordered outpatient care. Would that reduce or add to racial disparities ([link removed]) ?

The outpatient treatment system “is going to, by default, have a significant disparity in terms of who is being recommended,” a McKees Rocks psychiatrist told Public Source reporter Venuri Siriwardane ([link removed]) .
