John, this is outrageous.

Earlier this week, Texas Republicans locked Rep. Nicole Collier in the state House chamber and refused to let her leave unless she agreed to have police officers escort her out of the Capitol and follow her to her home.

She refused. She spent the night on the House floor. She hasn’t left the Capitol since Monday.

And just now, when she joined me and Democratic leaders on a Zoom call to update us on the disastrous voter suppression proposal being pushed by Texas Republicans, she was forced to abruptly leave the call. Before she left, she said she was being threatened with a felony.

Let’s be clear: This is an authoritarian effort to silence and police those who are standing up for democracy. It is an effort to silence and intimidate Black women. It is a blatant attempt to rush through a massive voter suppression bill that will cause untold damage to our democracy.

John, we cannot let it stand. We must elect people in every state — red and blue — who are going to fight for our democracy.
