This could be one of the most significant wins for religious freedom in decades.

Dear John,

When even The New York Times takes notice, you know something historic is happening.

On July 30, the Times ran a major story headlined: "How Conservative Christians Cracked a 70-Year-Old Law."

The article reported that after decades of pressure, prayer, and perseverance, the IRS has proposed reinterpreting how they will enforce the Johnson Amendment -- offering a settlement in the court case National Religious Broadcasters v. Werfel that would allow churches to be able to endorse political candidates from the pulpit without fear of losing their tax-exempt status.

And they specifically pointed to Family Research Council's leadership in this fight to dismantle one of the most dangerous threats to religious freedom in modern history. As Tony Perkins told the Times: "Now churches are free. The leash is gone."

Think about that. For 70 years, the federal government has been muzzling America's pulpits -- silencing pastors and threatening churches with punishment for speaking biblical truth about elections and leaders. And now, that muzzle is being broken.

FRC has been battling the Johnson Amendment for decades -- finding pastors willing to challenge the law in court, pressing Congress to act, and refusing to let the Left intimidate the church into silence. We even worked alongside the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) to bring the very lawsuit which has led to the IRS's proposed consent decree.

That is the power of your partnership. And because of your faithful support, we were ready for this moment.

With a network of more than 18,000 pastors nationwide standing ready, we are keeping them informed about this development and the freedom it should give them to speak to the issues.

As we anticipate this enormous rule change, will you join us and equip pastors to seize this once-in-a-lifetime moment and speak the truth boldly? Your gift today will help us take this message to every pastor who needs to hear it.

EQUIP PASTORS WITH FRC

John, the Times described this pending change as "the most significant victory involving church political organizing in 70 years." That is no exaggeration. However, this win for the First Amendment is already being challenged.

Soros-funded groups are calling on the IRS to "crack down" on churches. They know that if pastors can speak the truth, it will change hearts -- and change the direction of our culture. They want pastors silent and congregations uninformed.

This is the time to act. This is the time to secure freedom for the church in America.

But as the New York Times itself noted, this is only the beginning.

  • The IRS settlement still requires final approval from a federal judge.
  • Radical secular groups like Americans United for the Separation of Church and State have filed a motion to intervene -- meaning the case is ongoing!
  • And the Johnson Amendment is still on the books. Unless we repeal it completely, a future administration could once again try to silence pastors.

That's why FRC cannot -- and will not -- let up.

Christians need to send a clear message to the IRS and lawmakers in Washington, D.C.: we will not be silenced anymore. Will you stand with FRC and restore freedom of speech to the pulpit?

GIVE TODAY

The Apostle Paul asked believers to pray "that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel" (Eph. 6:19). That is our goal: to ensure every pastor can proclaim the truth boldly, in season and out of season (2 Tim. 4:2).

This could be the most significant victory for religious freedom in our lifetime. But the opposition is mobilizing quickly -- and we cannot afford to lose momentum.

Please make your best gift today to ensure FRC can continue leading in this fight.

Thank you for standing with us. Together, we can make certain that America's pulpits are free for generations to come.
