The August Papers
This month, throughout the August District Work Period, I want to take some time to highlight my work on the Committee on Appropriations. Each year, the Committee on Appropriations works to pass 12 bills that cover the spending policy of the American government. As a member of the Committee, I have the honor of working alongside my fellow Appropriators to advocate for Mississippi and Trump’s America First Agenda.
Throughout August, I wanted to give you some insight into how the Appropriations process works and what I do to advocate for the Third Congressional District of Mississippi. As we work through all 12 of the bills over the course of August, I hope to give you a better idea about my work on the Committee on Appropriations. I serve on three Appropriations subcommittees: Homeland Security; Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies; and Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies.
The Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security is primarily charged with appropriating funds for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its related agencies, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the U.S. Coast Guard. I also serve on the authorizing committee, the House Committee on Homeland Security, which is charged with writing legislation and conducting oversight of DHS and other government agencies involving the national security of the United States of America.
The Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies is primarily charged with appropriating funds for military construction and the business of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Mississippi is home to critical military installations including Naval Air Station Meridian, Camp Shelby, Mississippi Ordnance Plant, Columbus Air Force Base, Keesler Air Force Base, Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, and multiple National Guard installations.
The Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies is primarily charged with appropriating funds for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The Army Corps of Engineers falls under the jurisdiction of the subcommittee and oversees vital projects in Mississippi.
