[1]Juliana Stratton for Senate
Yesterday, Donald Trump went on Truth Social to say the Smithsonian museums should focus on America’s “brightness” instead of “how bad slavery was.”
Donald Trump is trying to muzzle museums, erase history, and tell us not to talk about the horrors of slavery. Folks, this is classic authoritarian behavior.
He even implied that the museums make America look bad by portraying the brutality of slavery and racism. But let me be clear: What makes America look bad isn’t telling the truth about our history — it’s when leaders try to erase it.
Not only is this terrifying, but it’s dangerous. It’s a slap in the face to millions of Americans who, like me, have ancestors who were enslaved.
My great-great-grandfather, William Stephens, was born into slavery. After the Emancipation Proclamation, he worked hard to build a life for himself and his community in Mississippi.
My history is one of strength; it is one of resistance. And no fragile man hiding behind his cell phone can take that away.
Here in Illinois, we don’t ignore the truths of our past — we learn from them. This fight is personal to me, and it’s why I will never back down from defending our history, our democracy, and our future.
Right now, Trump is proving once again that he will stop at nothing to silence our voices, rewrite our history, and undermine our democracy.
This is why I’m running for the U.S. Senate. Because Illinois deserves leaders who will fight back when Trump attacks our people, our freedoms, and even the truth of our nation’s past — because that’s how you keep a democracy alive.
Can you rush a contribution today to help me fight back against Trump’s whitewashing of history and defend the future of our democracy in Washington?

We honor our ancestors by telling the truth — and by continuing the fight for justice they started. We won't let Trump erase our past or dictate our future.
In solidarity,
