My grandparents taught me to be a good steward of the Earth — to care for our land, wildlife, and natural resources – not just for ourselves, but for generations to come. I’ve carried that sense of duty throughout every chapter of my life.
In Congress, I fought to protect sacred lands, backed the Green New Deal, and stood up to fossil fuel lobbyists who put profits over people.
I’m proud that in my tenure as Secretary of the Interior, we helped protect more lands and waters than any administration in U.S. history while also creating good jobs in clean energy, conservation, and cleaning up legacy pollution.
But now all of that progress is at risk.
Donald Trump and his MAGA allies have worked to gut environmental protections and sell off public lands — all while New Mexico stands on the front lines of the devastating impacts of climate change.
Governors are a critical line of defense against the Trump agenda, especially when it comes to standing up against the brazen attacks on our environment. And as governor, I will be a fierce defender of our home, but I can’t win this race on my own.
