While overdose deaths declined last year, more than 80,000 lives were still lost. Overdose Awareness Month is a key moment to support continued investment in the programs and services that can prevent overdose deaths.
Take Action: Encourage funding for overdose prevention and other addiction efforts
Data shows overdose deaths decreased last year, but tens of thousands of people still die from overdoses each year, and millions more have substance use disorders and are at risk for overdose and other harms.
In order to continue this progress and prevent a backslide, continued federal funding is needed for the agencies and programs that provide effective prevention and treatment services.
Congress is currently working on a budget for fiscal year 2026, which begins October 1. An early draft would maintain or increase funding for many of the agencies and programs that provide support for addiction research and programs.
Send a letter to your members of Congress urging them to ensure that the final budget bill for next year includes full funding for these agencies and programs to continue critical efforts to prevent overdoses and address the addiction crisis.
