Email from Commonwealth of Virginia August Edition Volume 4 | August 20th 2025 Commerce in the Commonwealth August Edition Visit our Website A Message from Secretary Segura Over the past month, I’ve had the privilege of meeting with Virginians from all walks of life, each with valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges facing our Commonwealth. One challenge that I continue to see is the contrast between the speed of business and government. Businesses move quickly to seize opportunities, and too often, government acts as a barrier. That’s why I’m proud of how swiftly the Youngkin Administration worked to finalize the recent historic AstraZeneca investment. This will be the largest investment in the history of their company. Deals of this magnitude normally take years to finalize, but from our first meeting in London to this announcement was just 31 days. Government truly can work at the speed of business with the right leadership and mindset. Learn more about Sec. A recurring concern was the burden of the meals tax, a policy imposed by county leadership despite being rejected by voters. While a local measure, the Secretary believes it’s important to speak out against policies that hinder business growth and entrepreneurship. In the News In July, Secretary Segura sent a letter to Fairfax County Chair Jeff McKay urging him to stop sitting on the sidelines in the fight to attract new jobs and investments. The Secretary stated that "refusing to compete for new business opportunities is a mistake, and Fairfax should be doing a better job of creating a business-friendly environment for their residents." "My calling in life is to create more opportunity for every community across Virginia. This administration is innovating every day to bring new communities to the table and empower them with the tools to be successful,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura. Community Spotlight In July, Secretary Segura met with members of Virginia's Afghan community for a conversation about civic engagement and economic opportunity. Many participants shared their strong desire to serve, invest, and help shape the future of their Virginia home. The Secretary highlighted the Governor’s vision of boundless opportunity, one that welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds to lead, serve on boards, and contribute to the Commonwealth’s success. Secretary Segura further received the honor of being presented with a traditional chapan. The Afghan community is, and will remain, a vital part of the Spirit of Virginia. Ribbon Cutting Spotlight Secretary Segura joined the celebration for Capital Doner’s expansion in Arlington, where he met with the owners, sampled their delicious menu, and even stepped behind the counter to try his hand at slicing doner. Capital Doner’s growth is a great example of how businesses can thrive in Virginia, a testament to our Commonwealth being the best place to live, work, and expand a business.
