Someone grasps a large channel catfish in shallow waters
Channel catfish headed for waters statewide
Looking for a reason to try a new fishing hole? This is it: more than 150,000 channel catfish are headed to over 180 waterbodies all across Nebraska. From rural reservoirs to city ponds, stocking efforts will begin in late August and continue on through September.
Raised at the North Platte State Fish Hatchery, these 10-inch fish have been overwintered and spent time in other hatchery ponds for further growth. And they are being placed in public waters where natural reproduction of channel cats might not be as robust due to habitat or predation.
To find out where these catfish are being stocked, visit our website and search our online Fish Stocking Database [ [link removed] ]. Pro tip: to get the best results, enter a species, a county and a recent year range. Then hit "Show Matching Settings" to get the results. Flip your phone sideways for better viewing.

Summer fish kills part of a natural cycle
Mother nature is sometimes hard to figure out. The recent run of hot temps and sunny weather, followed by a stretch of cloudy days, has led to fish kills in some areas, particularly in smaller bodies of water.
A natural occurrence, these kills are caused by low levels of dissolved oxygen in the water. Learn more about how and why fish kills happen, and what to do when you see or suspect one has happened from our own Daryl Bauer, who blogged about it recently.
