Dear John,
Nigel Farage’s latest stunt is as brazen as ever: he’s demanded the right to appoint his own peers to the House of Lords. With no sense of irony, he claims it would fix the upper chamber’s so-called “democratic disparity” – arguing it’s unfair that his party, and other small parties, are under-represented.
In reality, this is nothing more than a ploy to grab headlines and, if Starmer caves, power. Farage has proven time and again he has no interest in real democratic reform. He’s only interested in clicks, outrage, and power plays.
If his party, with just four MPs, were handed peers now, they’d gain unelected legislators influencing our laws for life. And don’t forget, UKIP still has peers from Farage’s last political venture.
More worrying still, what does this signal about how he would act as Prime Minister?
The House of Lords could be stacked for decades with hard-right ideologues, political extremists, and Farage’s billionaire backers. That’s not democracy.
Once again, he is treating our flawed institutions as opportunities for political profit, not democratic problems to be fixed.
We need a system that prevents power-hungry leaders like Farage from stacking the benches. A system that doesn’t hand wholly disproportionate power to minority governments. A system that ends the false promises and endless voter frustration.
Farage’s appeal taps into frustrations with our democracy, but he’s not interested in genuine change. Instead of speaking to people’s real concerns, he exploits them, stoking culture wars and division for his own personal gain.
We need to force Farage to fight fair. We cannot let him write the rules of our democracy.
We must build a better system, and we’ve already got the blueprint. We’re fighting for a fair and proportional political system, one that ensures every voice is heard and guards us against chancers and opportunists.
But we can only win this fight with your support.
