Dear John, A staple of our work at GIFFORDS Law Center is tracking and analyzing the hundreds of gun-related bills that move in state legislatures across the country. We highlight the latest trends for lawmakers and advocates in our monthly edition of Gun Law Trendwatch during the first half of the year, while most state legislatures are in session. And this year, there’s been a lot of progress. [ [link removed] ]States across the country are prioritizing gun violence prevention. Donate today to support our work. So far in 2025, more than a dozen states have passed new gun safety laws. Colorado has been a standout state, passing nearly 12 new bills related to gun violence prevention—including an election intimidation law based on a novel model law co-written by attorneys at GIFFORDS Law Center. Across the country, policy priorities this session include: * Funding community violence intervention * Holding the gun industry accountable * Prohibiting certain dangerous weapons * Addressing firearm trafficking Of course, the gun lobby has continued its efforts to weaken existing laws and pass dangerous ones in states like Montana and Arkansas. Though thanks to the unwavering dedication of the gun safety movement, Florida Republicans failed in their goal to repeal the gun safety laws it passed in the wake of the Parkland shooting and the Texas legislature was unable to move forward with a number of dangerous policies. States like California, Michigan, and New Jersey are still in session and are poised to take action on gun safety before the end of the year. Our experts will stay closely involved with states still in session, help set up big wins for next year, and continue to fight for the commonsense laws that save lives. Our successes wouldn’t be possible without your support. Thank you for standing alongside us in this fight.
