Dear SVYD Members and Allies,
Here in Santa Clara County, we’re facing difficult challenges. Federal reductions threaten our county health system, potential funding cuts could strain our public transit infrastructure, a severe housing crisis continues to drive the lack of affordable housing, and we continue to see growing hostility toward unhoused neighbors, immigrant communities, and LGBTQ+ residents. At the same time, right-wing groups are organizing to take power on local school boards and city councils.
In moments like these, strong, informed, progressive leadership at the local level is more important than ever. That’s why we’re proud to announce Build the Bench, SVYD’s leadership development program preparing the next generation of progressive candidates for city council and school board in Santa Clara County.
Beginning in September 2025, Build the Bench will provide a series of courses covering everything you need to know to run a successful campaign. Participants will receive hands-on guidance in campaign strategy, issue advocacy, networking, and community engagement—while building connections with other leaders committed to equity, justice, and our shared democratic values.
For over a decade, SVYD has helped countless local campaigns secure victory. Now we’re sharing that knowledge with community members ready to step up and run within the next four years.
