Unlike Trump, we take what our words seriously, so we don’t say this lightly

Hi John,

Before we start here, we want to make it clear that we debated internally here for a while about this message. We don’t want to be an organization that engages in hyperbole and outrage politics for the sake of clicks, but we also don’t want to shy away from stating truths that need to be said. And we are obviously not a court of law, but over the past few days and weeks, the verdict for us has become clear:

President Trump is a criminal and a traitor to this country.

That may not even be that controversial of a statement for many of you. Even though it feels like 20 years ago already, he was justifiably impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives just last year, and before that, the Mueller Report detailed a number of potential criminal and acts to which Trump has been a party.

But, we need to speak the plain truth, whether it seems self-evident or over-the-top. And in this case, that means calling out Donald Trump as a traitor to our country. Over the past few weeks, Trump has:

  • Continued to question the viability of our voting procedures.
  • Declined to clearly state whether he would leave office after losing.
  • Committed to posting 50,000 vote “watchers” at polling locations to interfere with voting.
  • Encouraged states and citizens to reject proven, safe, and legitimate vote-by-mail options because he thinks that it will benefit his political opponents.

And now, in addition to these domestic betrayals of our country and its principles, The New York Times has reported Trump’s blatant foreign treason as well -- turning an active blind eye to Russians placing a bounty on American soldiers in Afghanistan. It’s just too much.

Look, we don’t think we need to convince anyone reading this email that Trump needs to go (if we’re wrong and you need it, the unsubscribe option is down in our disclaimer -- feel free to avail yourselves of it). But we do need to remember why we’re not giving up. Why we need to keep pushing and working and organizing to get out the vote this year.

We are not simply talking about a choice between people with different policy positions -- we are talking about a choice between affirming a democratic America or embracing a new America that is based on authoritarianism, racism, and the ego of Donald Trump.

We know we’ve been emailing you a lot recently, and we’re probably not the only ones, but this fight is real. The consequences are serious. In our minds, there is nothing more important, no better use of our time, energy, and money over these next 128 days then bending our efforts towards defeating this outright traitor currently in the Oval Office.

We believe that expanding vote-by-mail is going to be key to that effort; to making sure that Americans can vote safely and have their voices heard. And if we do our job right, by November 3rd those voices together will shout out together “NO MORE” to the treason of Trump.

This won’t be the last fundraising ask you hear from us, but we want to take this Sunday to outline the gravity of the situation. To remind all of us the big picture of why we’re doing this, and what the stakes truly are.

So we’re not going to make a specific ask today -- we’ll have a better one for that when we get our next EOQ update tomorrow -- but if you believe as we do, then please give what you can today.

As always, thanks for being in this with us. Let’s make it happen.

Best,

Ben & Suzy

------------
Vote From Home 2020 is a grassroots movement that's making vote by mail more accessible. With a $25 donation, we'll send vote by mail applications to 20 voters. COVID-19 has brought America to a halt, and with it almost all in-person voter mobilization efforts. While volunteers can’t get on buses to swing states or go door-to-door right now, there is a huge opportunity for progressives, especially in solidly blue states, to get out the vote where it counts. By sending vote by mail ballots to targeted states and following up with text and calls to voters, we can ensure the 2020 general election is safe and accessible. Please forward this email if you know someone who may be interested. Our average gift is just under $25 so consider donating that today to support voting rights.
