Growing up, I felt that way all the time, being Black in Chicago and born to a biological mother who suffered from a substance abuse disorder. People didn’t think I’d be able to accomplish much. Sometimes, I even believed them.

But then I remembered what my Dad always said: “all you’ve gotta do is try.” So I tried organizing in my community. And everything clicked.

I got out in my community and made a real difference, John. I defied the odds.
