Friend — Trump’s DOJ has sent an ultimatum across the country: Any city that refuses to comply with Trump’s draconian, violent ICE crackdowns and deportations will lose all federal funding, and could even face prosecution by the US Attorney General.

Well, today we have a simple response for Trump: Boston will not bow down.

Trump may have found a loophole to send federal agents into the streets of Washington, DC to harass people, violate civil rights, and terrorize immigrant communities.

But Boston is our city, not his. Nobody here elected him anything. State laws allow Boston to refuse to cooperate with Trump’s authoritarian administration, and the Constitution protects those laws.

And make no mistake: Boston will never be bullied into abandoning freedom. We’ve always led the way–fighting kings and tyrants, sparking the American Revolution, and showing the world what a free and open society can be. We have fought for our independence before. We won’t back down now.

Today, Boston is a city of immigrants from every corner of the globe who are free to live, work, and contribute to our vibrant community. It’s no accident that we’re one of the safest cities in America: in Boston, we take care of each other.

What we don’t do is unleash masked men to snatch our neighbors into unmarked vans and deport them in the dead of night. That’s not safety — that’s tyranny. And it has no place here.

But don’t get it wrong. Our defiance in the face of authoritarianism will not go unnoticed.

Trump, the DOJ, and the entire far-right are going to throw everything they have our way to punish Boston and all of Massachusetts for standing up for our values and against unconstitutional threats and intimidation.
