Right now in Texas, democracy is under lock and key.
Republicans are demanding that Democratic lawmakers sign “permission slips” and submit to 24/7 police escorts – all to prevent them from ever breaking quorum again while Trump-backed gerrymandering maps are forced through the legislature.
Rep. Nicole Collier of Fort Worth refused. And now she’s effectively trapped in the Texas House chamber – punished simply for defying an outrageous demand from her Republican colleagues.
“My constituents sent me to Austin to protect their voices and rights,” she said. “I refuse to sign away my dignity as a duly elected representative just so Republicans can control my movements and monitor me with police escorts.”
This abuse of power is outrageous. It’s about more than one chamber or one lawmaker. It’s about whether Republicans can silence opposition through intimidation and force.
