Dear John,

There’s no end in sight to the gerrymandering wars, as a mid-decade redistricting cycle that began in Texas has spiraled across the country. Republicans in Missouri, Indiana, and Ohio – and Democrats in California, Illinois, Maryland, and New York – may soon redraw maps in their party’s favor.

This national problem requires a national solution. Reintroduced in Congress last month, the Fair Representation Act is that solution. It would stop gerrymandering and make every congressional district competitive by combining ranked choice voting with multi-member districts.

Over the past few weeks, the Fair Representation Act – and its foundational concept of proportional representation – have been making waves in the media. Read on for highlights from media coverage – and ask your representative to support the Fair Representation Act here.

The Fair Representation Act in the news

Earlier today, FairVote’s David Daley appeared on Here & Now, a popular national public radio program, to discuss the ongoing redistricting wars. In the interview, David shared

"We need to be looking at different models. The very best model would be a more proportional House along the lines that Jamie Raskin and Don Beyer have suggested in the Fair Representation Act. That would really fix the gerrymandering problem with larger multi-member districts and ranked choice voting....

We are down to maybe two dozen competitive seats. Really, this is no way to run a democracy. The time is really here to be talking about a national standard."

Daley also has discussed the redistricting crisis – and need for reform – including the New York Times and the Washington Post, and on 1ACNNMSNBC and PBS:

Representative Don Beyer – lead sponsor of the Fair Representation Act – also discussed the bill in the Washington Post:

"Institutional change is slow. However, I think the silver lining is that Americans seem so upset by this gerrymandering war… So maybe now there’s a window for anti-gerrymandering on a national basis."
