That sentence should never be revolutionary. But as a Black woman residing in occupied DC, it’s not just an act of resistance; it is utterly dangerous.
Leaving one’s house with a buddy should never be a mandate. Not being able to walk your neighborhood without fear of the US military detaining you on domestic soil for no reason other than a fascist agenda should never be the norm. But this is the new reality for 700,000 Washingtonians.
Unfortunately, while our awareness is heightened, it is not unusual nor abnormal. Rather, it is the state of existence that millions of black, brown, indigenous, and migrant communities historically and continuously live in these United States.
Trump’s occupation of DC with the National Guard is absolutely unprecedented, uncalled for, and egregious. This occupation must end immediately! And if you live outside of DC, please heed the call to action and contact your Congressional Representatives now; demand that they support HJ Res 115 to end the emergency period.
The National Guard in DC does not make us safer.
Demilitarizing law enforcement, providing affordable housing and healthcare for all, increasing living wages, ensuring equitable and just public education, and making DC the 51st state make us safer.
Movement for Freedom is organizing on the frontlines across America to ensure that all people have access to proper safety and freedom. Please support our work today so that taking a simple walk today, tomorrow, or in the future doesn’t ever put anyone anywhere at risk.
