Dear John,

As we share these stories of innovation, we are also marking World Humanitarian Day on 19 August, a moment to pause and pay tribute to the humanitarian cause and its life-saving impact.

Behind every digital tool that supports refugees, there is a team working to turn ideas into real solutions that make a difference. From digital identity systems to mobile cash assistance, technology is reshaping how UNHCR delivers protection and support around the world.

On this World Humanitarian Day, we also recognize the dedicated people behind these innovations, whose compassion and courage bring them to life.

In Jordan, the UNHCR team, led by our colleagues Shahzad Asghar and Dana Alyajeen, has developed DigitalAAP, an AI-driven Digital Feedback System that provides refugees with a direct and simple way to share their concerns. Funded by the Innovation Service of UNHCR, this project allows refugees to call in using their UNHCR ID, and leave a one-minute voice message. The system transcribes, categorizes, and maps the messages, enabling UNHCR teams to quickly identify and respond to issues by location and observe trends over time.

Designed with refugee input at every stage, the solution has already been successfully tested with 1,000 refugees and is undergoing further assessment ahead of a broader rollout.

This refugee-centric innovation is transforming how feedback informs better services on the ground. Learn more

In Burkina Faso, a UNHCR Digital Hub is connecting displaced people to new opportunities by providing free internet access, digital skills training, and resources that help refugees gain independence. The hub has become a lifeline, allowing people to access education, find jobs, and stay connected with loved ones, offering hope and practical support in difficult circumstances. Learn more

Similarly, our UNHCR colleague Nizar Zeidan, together with other local UNHCR teams, helped establish another Digital Hub in Chad, providing vital connectivity and digital training to displaced communities. This collaborative effort is a powerful example of how technology and human dedication come together to open doors for refugees. Read More About Nizar’s work on LinkedIn

These stories highlight how UNHCR’s digital services are helping displaced individuals gain access to vital resources, build new skills, and create opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.

Your support makes it possible to expand these essential programs and reach more people in need.

Thank you for joining us on this journey toward a more connected, compassionate world, especially as we mark World Humanitarian Day together.

Warm regards,

Monia Hassan
