Hi Friend,
Last Thursday, I bore witness to a patrol of dozen or so variously armored and armed people marching down U Street, and then back up it 30 minutes later. It was some combination of ICE, National Guard, and other federal agents who have swooped into our city at the emergency order of the President. For an initiative purportedly intended [[link removed]] to reduce crime and make us safe, it felt alarming and unsafe.

We stand with [[link removed]] all those who call Washington, DC, home. In this post [[link removed]], we reflect on how it's much more than a stage for a national show.

I'll be attending one of Free DC's Orientations [[link removed]], and I'd love to see you there to get informed and learn how to strengthen our collective voice. After that, we can continue the conversation of abundant housing, better transit, and equitable land use at our GGWash Happy Hour [[link removed]] this Wednesday.

My fellowship at GGWash is about to close at the end of this month. However I have good news: I'll be joining the staff as their Engagement Associate in the middle of September! I look forward to continuing to engage with the community, at events and beyond.

Speaking of September, don't forget our Fall Mixer [[link removed]] on the 24th.

Washington, DC, belongs to the people, not to the president [[link removed]]
The president has issued orders in recent days to deploy federal agents and exert control over local police in Washington, DC. They’re patrolling the streets and public spaces, forcing the removal of encampments, and detaining residents. But the District doesn’t belong to them, and it’s not just a stage for a national show: people live here. And what happens here will set the scene for what happens in cities across the country.

Do Something #89: August isn’t a real month [[link removed]]
This week on Do Something (before we go on vacation): two weird tricks to fund transit; no on RFK, still; the region’s biggest development; and take this survey if you live in Alexandria.

GGWater Week [[link removed]]
The Washington, DC region is wet, and it can be wetter. We’re flooding you with water-based content this week, to remind ourselves that water defines much of our region’s past, present, and future. (All posts are linked here in our Saturday email)

See you out there!
All the best,
Tricia Chicka
