Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

Dear Friend,

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the horrific, nuclear attacks by the US against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

As I write, we are now the closest we have been to nuclear war since the Cold War. It is therefore more important than ever that we raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons and help to build the global anti-nuclear movement.

Please consider making a donation to CND today, to help us to reach our appeal target of £17,000. Your donation will support our work raising awareness of the lives that have already been destroyed by nuclear weapons and the unique threat that these weapons of mass destruction pose to humanity again today.

Now, in the 80th anniversary year of the devastation wrought in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the UK government is planning an alarming expansion of its nuclear capabilities. This will involve spending millions of pounds to purchase twelve F-35A fighter jets equipped with US-made nuclear bombs. These bombs have been described as ‘tactical’ nuclear weapons that can be used on the battlefield. This is an attempt to normalise the use of nuclear weapons, which we must resist. Each bomb has a blast capacity of killing up to 600,000 people. In response, CND is organising a national demonstration at RAF Marham where the government plans to station the jets.

This year, to help remember the victims of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and to highlight today’s dangers of nuclear weapons, CND has:

  • Organised a parliamentary meeting, involving Kyoko Gibson, a second-generation Hibakusha. (You can watch Kyoko's testimony here).
  • Arranged to send two of our Vice-Presidents, Jeremy Corbyn and Caroline Lucas, to participate in commemoration events taking place in Hiroshima.
  • Supported and promoted 80th anniversary vigils and events organised by local groups across the country. (See the gallery here).

Your donation will go towards CND’s efforts to oppose the UK government’s reckless decision to invest more money in deadly nuclear weapons at a time of extreme global uncertainty. Please donate today to help fund our campaigning in the months ahead.

If we want to avoid the further dangers of nuclear annihilation, we need to build pressure on the UK government and force it to start abiding by its obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

In 1955, ten years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell implored the politicians of the world: “Remember your humanity.” Today that message is more critical than ever. Help us to build a world free from nuclear weapons!

In peace,
Sophie Bolt
General Secretary
