Our new national survey shows something you might not expect: the vast majority of Americans actually agree on ways to reduce gun violence, no matter their politics or whether they own a gun.

Our 2025 Johns Hopkins National Survey of Gun Policy found strong public support for several life-saving policies, including:

  • 77% support letting family members ask a court to temporarily remove guns from someone at risk of violence (71% of gun owners)
  • 82% support stopping people under a temporary domestic violence protection order from having a gun (79% of gun owners)
  • 74% support requiring safe storage of firearms (62% of gun owners)
  • 72% support requiring a license to buy a gun (61% of gun owners)
  • 72% support funding community violence intervention programs (67% of gun owners)
