For too many children, it’s cracked asphalt. No shade. No color.

Students at schools such as César E. Chávez Campus in Oakland, California, and Bregy Elementary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, envisioned something better for their schoolyard. With crayons and big ideas, they codesigned a new play space—one filled with shady trees, painted murals, and places to learn, breathe, and belong.

What began as an asphalt lot is now a living space for the whole neighborhood.

Because when we transform a schoolyard, we do more than plant trees. We plant hope.
