John,

When it comes to wildfires, floods, hurricanes, and extreme heat,
accurate, timely weather forecasts and alerts can mean the difference
between life and death.

But right now, the National Weather Service (NWS), the agency responsible
for warning millions of Americans about dangerous weather events, is
facing massive staffing shortages due to the Trump administration’s
reckless budget cuts.

Just take California, for example: two of the six NWS offices are
operating with more than half of their positions vacant. These are the
offices that issue wildfire warnings, support first responders on the
ground, and help farmers plan their crops — and they’re short-staffed in
the middle of an active fire season.

consequences, California senators warn

That’s why I’m pushing back hard and using every tool at my disposal to do
so.

I blew the whistle on these dangerous cuts and made sure the public was
aware of what Trump and his agency were doing. I’ve started to conduct
rigorous oversight over this decision – who knew what, when, and why they
chose to target my constituents. I’m fighting to get answers.

I’ve introduced the INSURE Act to help stabilize the home insurance
market, and I’m fighting to reverse these staffing cuts at NWS and NOAA,
because climate disasters are becoming more frequent. Instead of
preparing, Trump and his allies are dismantling the very infrastructure
that keeps us safe. I won’t stand for that.

our communities from deadly weather events, please add your name to my
petition today.

Protecting life and property from natural disasters shouldn’t be a
partisan issue. And yet, somehow, Trump has made it that way.
